While planning out our garden this year we had to reflect on years past.
The last few years we've tried a few things:
Garden at the top of a hill
Garden at the bottom of a hill
Hand watering
Partial soaker hose watering
Ground level gardening
Some raised beds
So this year we did our research. We read many articles and watched a few videos to make our best plan for this years garden.
Almost every homesteader we followed through articles said that finally after years of trying they decided that to produce a healthy amount of produce; raised beds were the way to go.
A couple other benefits for us are:
Not having to kneel on the ground while picking produce
Not as many weeds
Easy set up for our soaker hoses
Great layout plan
Easy to mulch
Easy to add compost
Full control of what soil and organic matter that go into the box
Off to the world wide web to find the perfect layout planner for the garden!
Yes I need a plan in hand when I am doing something new.
Below is a picture of what was accomplished on the page. They tell you how many plants can be planted per square foot. What plants grow well together, as well as what does not. I could layout the greenhouse and the exact footage to be able to layout where raised boxes will be as well as our ground level garden for the melons and bigger squash. It's pretty awesome.

When it came time to plant, it was so easy! Just using the map we made we could grab the trays of seedlings we started months ago and head out. After a day of laying out boxes we were both feeling a little bit tired and could easily go to the map to show us where everything should be planted; as opposed to waiting until we were out there with 100 plants wondering where it all should go.
